Low team performance is one of the biggest issues in the workplace today. Creating High Performing Teams is the fastest way to turn a business around, deliver a failing project, increase sales and develop a cohesive and committed Leadership team who are the greatest influencer on their employees, clients and suppliers.
Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.
Team Dynamics Explained
There are eight different archetypes that make up human personalities, this is explained on our Talent Dynamics page in more detail. Each person will be slightly different, but understanding the energies that make up each of the archetypes is the biggest clue into how people ‘do what they do’ sub-consciously. When a person is undertaking activities or receiving information which is most natural to them, we describe this as being ‘in Flow’.
A person working ‘in flow’ is going to be at their most productive, experience the least amount of stress and basically will be having fun! Organise your team members to each be assigned to work that best fits with their archetype and you will have a team in flow. Teams that are ‘in flow’ and are more productive, creates an organisation that is delivering at its peak.
Therefore Margaret Mead’s famous quote above is very relevant here.
PERSONAL FLOW leads to TEAM FLOW which creates BUSINESS FLOW = SUCCESS
Team dynamics are the unconscious, psychological forces that influence the direction of a team’s behaviour and performance. They are like undercurrents in the sea, which can carry boats in a different direction to the one they intend to sail. Having High Performing Team Dynamics is about creating a culture, and providing the necessary tools so that individuals within a team want to work together towards a common goal.
Your organisation is made up of People. Look after your people and they will look after your business and deliver you the results you are looking for.
There are five keys to unlocking potential, productivity and results through when you create High Performing Teams, these are:
Key 1: Know and then trust your team’s talents
Key 2: Engage, empower and energise them in ways that are most meaningful
Key 3: Alignment, action and engender accountability to build trust and add value
Key 4: Measure, manage and motivate as individuals
Key 5: Create a safe workplace with supportive systems
Why should you improve your Team Dynamics?
Your payroll is likely to be your single biggest expense which needs to be funded each month, despite the productivity of your employees. Productivity drops significantly with disengaged staff which all takes $ off the bottom line and hinders successful outcomes.
The graph above comes from a report published by KPMG Consulting, it quantifies the impact of people who are not engaged or motivated. Typically the first to ‘jump ship’ are the top performers when their talents are not recognised or harnessed. This leaves the poorer performers to fill the key roles, creating a downward spiral.
Creating high performing teams increases morale, delivers great service to customers and makes coming to work enjoyable for everyone and in turn delivers far better results. Staff feel understood become more productive, self-motivating and enjoy being held accountable for their actions.
High performing teams also reduce recruitment costs as there is lower turnover. Industry statistics suggest it costs between A$33K – A$99K to recruit the wrong staff. Absenteeism is estimated to be costing Australian companies A$33 billion per annum! Engaged teams also attract new customers faster and know how to retain the existing clientele.
In fact, both the direct and indirect cost to businesses of having the wrong people in the organisation (or the right people in the wrong roles) who are not aligned with their talents and ‘flow’ can be staggering. Flow is often described as being ‘in the zone’ or that area between anxiety and boredom! It is also the path of least resistance and the place where things seems effortless and a lot gets achieved quickly.
“If people like you they’ll listen to you. If they trust you they’ll do business with you.”
